Assignment 21: Reading Reflection, Number 2
The book Makers: The New Industrial Revolution by Chris Anderson is about the fact that we are in what he descries as the third industrial revolution. The first was of course in 1776 and the one we know form history. The second is the digital age. The third is digital manufacturing, which combines the first two revolutions.
This book is related to this class because it is about the generation of Makers, us, and how we are driving the next big economy wave. With our do-it-yourself product design and creation. That this age is the product of millions of garage tinkerers that is going to be unleashed. And this class we are being those garage tinkerers because we are trying to creative innovation with our own companies/businesses. We are creating this new age or at least pushing it forward.
I would say that if I was going to make an activity basic on what this book was talking about I would go on the idea of the garage tinkerers. Maybe try and so students a picture of a garage full of everyday items one would find within it and as them what they can create out of those items. Kind of like the idea of asking someone all the thing they could make with bricks. This would work on creative thing and innovation.
For me the ahh moment was really in the phrasing that this is the third industrial revolution. Personally I have never thought about it like that. Maybe eras yes, but never at it own industrial revolution. And it really is we are rebuilding what industry is and how it work. This all began with the first one that we have built on.

I really like the book that you picked because we have to understand how companies and businesses developed over the history to the point of today where it is how it is. With the insights of history we can better understand why people think like they do today. Moreover I really like your idea to implement it in the classroom which fosters innovation and creativity heavily.
ReplyDeleteHi Kaitlyn. I think it’s interesting that we are in the middle of another industrial revolution. I agree that freelancers are making major contributions to the economy. In this gig economy, it makes sense that so many people want to be creating and doing for their own business, as companies shift away from long-term employment of some workers in favor of a temporary, contract workforce. It appears as if workers have responded by investing in themselves and their talents. One recommendation I have is to investigate what the next industrial revolution might look like, as it might be interesting to see how it compares to the ones you read about in the book.
ReplyDeleteHey Kaitie,
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a very intriguing book. I don't really have the skillset for inventing things, so this sounds like it could be a great read to learn how to do something else. I think there are certainly a type of people that are skilled in this area and they create the most useful things that we utilize in our every day lives. However, as it appears from your book, you can definitely find things in your every day life that can turn into great inventions, you don't always have to seek out the next best thing.
Hello Katie,
ReplyDeleteI really liked this post! It made me consider picking this book up and giving it a shot. I like the idea of how we are the generation of makers and are driving the next big economy wave. This makes a lot of sense in my mind because we are attempting to find a new way to enhance the economy, and the only way to do that is through invention. I also found it interesting that we are in the third industrial revolution. That is crazy to think about!
