Assignment 4: Forming an Opportunity Belief

I believe that we have an unmet need in the fact that there are math class and platform that require you to be able to write symbols like pi to answer questions or write out equation, but the everyday computer does not always us to accomplish this task. I will admit that these programs usually have some sort of clickable section to write these needed symbols, but it is not efficient and can throw of what you are doing when you have to click though a bunch of taps to find what you are looking for.

#1: Young Female College Student
  • Have you ever done math online? yes in the sense of homework.
  • When did you do this? seven years ago
  • What was the program you used? something through TTC
  • What level of math where you doing? college algebra
  • Did you find that you would lose the place you where at in whatever problem you were working because you had to switch between typing and clicking? No, because the interface only supplied the variables or symbols you needed for that problem.
Reflection: It seems like for her program it was not an opportunity to her. Due to the fact that the program was very straightforward and easy to use. These suggest that it maybe about the program or possible the level of mathematics that is being done.

#2: Professional Writer
  • Have you ever done math online? yes for an online college class
  • When did you do this? 2010
  • What was the program you used? I do not
  • What level of math where you doing?  college algebra, it was a very basic math class
  • Did you find that you would lose the place you where at in whatever problem you were working because you had to switch between typing and clicking? I don't believe we had an extra keyboard tab... it was just little blank boxes you had to fill in.
Reflection: Due to the level of mathematics this opportunity does not seem to apply, but that would be because of the time that has passed since this course was taken as well.

#3: Sophomore In College
  • Have you ever done math online? yes for two semesters now
  • When did you do this? this spring and last fall
  • What was the program you used? WebAssign
  • What level of math where you doing?  Precalculus in the fall semester and this semester it is Calculus 1
  • Did you find that you would lose the place you where at in whatever problem you were working because you had to switch between typing and clicking? Yes. I don't know if it is because I get really focused or what. But the tabs that WebAssign gives is sometimes distracting and I always have to remember to make sure it does not effect what I am typing as the final product.
Reflection: This person did seem to share in on the opportunity, but they have also had more experience in higher level of mathematics. This could effect the amount of information that they may have needed and both classes take have been don't recently and on a different program so the program could effect the issue as well.

Summary: I feel that the opportunity belief I have may not be as large as I originally thought, but I also believe that to have a better picture I should interview people who have taken more math classes online and at higher levels. I do think that the information I have gather if useful though, because it puts into prospective my own beliefs. It gives me a more realistic view of the world rather than just myself. I think entrepreneurship sis all about adapting, but you also need to make sure that you have all the information so that you can adapt in a positive direction.

  1. Hey Kaitlyn,
I think this is an interesting idea that you have and remember seeing this problem on your bug list. I recently took several online math classes and share in your ideas that it would be great if you could type math symbols with one or two buttons combinations instead of having to type 4-6 characters to represent 1 math symbol. However, I feel that the majority in life would have little use for them and I believe they sell math keyboards for people that actually use higher level algebra's and math on a day to day basis. Great job taking something that bugged you though and attempting to find a solution to create an opportunity from it.
